About
Hannamari Shakya is a Helsinki-based, artist-photographer, author and creative director; documentarian, producer, curator, educator and publisher with an interest in artistic documentary photography, and personal projects that explore individualistic themes and narratives. Shakya uses visual storytelling as a way of engaging more intimately with these issues.
She is also a teacher of creative writing and have studied literature and writing and is fully committed to engage different groups in creative writing and believes in exploring one’s own narrative and identity through the written language.
Shakya is currently working on her fourth book project Eye, You and I: Letters to my Son. Her third book He Called Me a Sparrow deals with transgenerational trauma. Her second book The Girl Who Didn't Marry a Tree questions identity and focuses on women who have more than one ethnic or cultural background.
She is also publishing photography books, educating in various different universities and holding master classes for professional photographers, who aim to make long term, in-depth documentary photography projects.
Shakya is the founding editor-in-chief, creative director and publisher of the award-winning photography magazine Raw View. In 2018, Raw View Magazine entered a new phase when it transformed into Raw View Editions, an independent publishing house.
She has been awarded with several different awards and recognitions like the Finnish National Award for Photography. She holds an MA in Culture and Art.
