Curating exhibitions

I believe that curating is very close to making publications. Both have tabula rasa to start with. Exhibitions are usually three dimensional “white spaces” and building a publication is a one dimensional version of the same. Both, obviously have their own demanding characters but simply put, it’s the same challenging work in many ways.

The most essential and burning questions for myself as a curator are: How do I serve the visual aesthetic that the artist has built in a way that creates a layered atmosphere – that actually brings more to the work, than just underlining what there already is.

How can I build tension between photographic work and space? There should be some kind of dialogue. I’m also a big believer in contradictions. If we just have unity, it can lead to visual fatigue. Ambiguity and openness in interpretation are really a key for building something stimulating and original.

Jörn Donner exhibition

Jörn Donner project started in 2021. I went through Jörn Donner's photo archive, a total of 35,000 negative frames, and selected about 200 images for the book and exhibition.
